Dembelsky album - in the subculture of military servicemen of special service, a specially designed album with photographs, text documents, handwritten text, and other materials about the memorial service. It is prepared at a time when a soldier is close to demobilization from the ranks of the Armed Forces ("demobilization").
The concept of "Dembel album" is much broader than just an album with photographs. By its nature and purpose, it is the most original type of “samizdat” - an album-book created by the artist himself with copyright notes on an important stage of life. Such an album belongs to the type of a man-made book — performed in a single version, an author’s work containing biographical details that reflect the length of life associated with military service, autobiographical and therefore unique.
In its psychological, social, and artistic structure, the demobilization album is not standard. As a rule, amateurs, amateurs or owners themselves create it, imitating professional artists and writers, collecting drawings, prints, photographs, postcards, documents, wishes of colleagues in a single book, giving all this a certain system and inherent only in the army subculture meaning. This album is oversaturated with peculiar elements of art - painting, graphics, photography, collage, and often even chasing.
As a rule, a demobilization album is made out manually by the author or, at his request, by colleagues of the album owner who have artistic inclinations. There are many ways and methods of designing an album. They depend on the type of troops, place of service, local traditions, but there are general rules - a demobilization album should be bright, conspicuous, surprising the viewer.
In its content, the demobilization album is a universal biographical historical and artistic document. The main content is photographs reflecting the individual memory of the owner. Depending on the time of creation, he expresses the tastes of society, or rather, a certain socio-temporal slice projected onto the army subculture.
The Dembels album represents the most radical way of performing an author’s book. At the same time, it contains naive rudeness, the ingenuousness of a young man, simplicity and a desire to make a book about himself.
It is also worth noting that in fact, both in form, approach to design and execution, as well as in content, ideological content, the demobilization album is closely connected with such a layer of creativity as scrapbooking. It can be considered as one of the forms of the latter, if not related to it by genetic kinship, then as an example of a peculiar convergence. It is also noticeable that the demobilization album is, in some way, a continuation of the school tradition of conducting notebook profiles.
At the end of the seventies, as well as in the eighties of the XX century, with the beginning of the struggle that began in the troops against unregulated relations, the political department of the army decided that the tradition of making demobilization albums was an element of the so-called "hazing", and therefore the army was an instruction has been sent instructing commanders and political workers in every possible way to deal with this phenomenon. In the so-called “statutory units” (in which the level of discipline was very high), the production of demobilization albums was transferred to the illegal plane, they were performed secretly, hid in every possible way from commanders and political workers. It was strictly forbidden to produce “framed photographs,” that is, photographs taken illegally in a form and form that went beyond what was permitted. It was allowed to store only photographs executed by professional photographers, only a portrait view. Despite all the repressive measures, the command of the armed forces failed to uproot the tradition of making and designing demobilization albums.
In individual military units, where the command understood that it was useless to deal with this phenomenon, in fact it was legalized. In this case, the time was allocated to the military for the production of "demobilization albums", based on the regulation of official activities, as a rule, provided for the personal time of the military. For their designation, military personnel with artistic taste, usually graduated from art schools, were allocated to help, they housed parts of the photograph pre-approved by the command, the so-called “tracing-paper” (separators between pages), elements of soldier folklore that glorified service in one form or another troops or the form of the Armed Forces. In such military units, with the approval of the command, contests of "demobilization albums" were held, the winners of which were awarded with diplomas and prizes.
